March 29, 2008 - Living History
Visitors enjoyed the hourly
programs with West Battery and the 4th US (V-1872). The information
on these two groups are below, however they have been participating
in our Living History Events for several years and still have
a couple of new things each time.
These dedicated individuals do not receive
any compensation for these Living History programs, however they
do appreciate donations. Their goal is to teach the public about
our history. They are willing to talk to the visitors and are
happy to answer questions. Come and join us for this eduational
event that will take you back in time.
Grand Gulf Military Park appreciates
these volunteers and hope you will support this event.

Vicitors enjoying the re-enactor lecture
On April 8, 2006 the sounds
of battle once again echoed across the hills of Mississippi. Reenactors
from West's Battery and Company F 4th U.S. gave park visitors
the opportunity to learn more about the Civil War from the viewpoint
of the men who fought it. Visitors had the opportunity to talk
with re-enactors, view drills, see period weapons - including
cannon - fire.
West's Battery is a group
of dedicated Civil War reenactors who portray the 6th Louisiana
Light Artillery. Members come from North Louisiana and East Texas.
West Battery members portray Civil War artillerymen - complete
with period cannon that fired each hour. Along with their sidearms
they bring a 1861 Parrott Rifle that roar with each firing.
The 4th US (V-1872) is a Venture
Crew of the Boy Scouts that reenacts a Federal dismounted cavalry/artillery
unit at living history programs and reenactments of the Civil
War and Indian Wars period. The unit is headquarted in the Dallas-Fort
Worth, Texas area. They also bring side arms and Mountain Howitzers.
It is amazing to watch these dedicated young people educate our
visitors.
Hourly programs provide visitors
an opportunity to experience a new way of understanding the Civil
War from the perspective of the men who fought it. Each program
includes information, action, and a few surprises!. After each
program, the members of West's Battery are available to talk with
visitors, answer questions, and discuss their unique hobby as
"living historians". This has was a great year with
nearly 300 visitors to enjoy the Living History. Thank you to
all of those that participated.
